Account
Delete your Kata account.
You can delete your Kata account at any time, in the app or by email. Here is how, what is deleted and when, and what stays and for how long.
In the app
Sign in with the account you want to delete. It takes a minute, and the steps are the same everywhere:
- iPhone: open your Profile with your picture in the top left, scroll to the very bottom and tap Delete account. Type DELETE, choose whether the backups on this iPhone go too, and tap Delete my account forever.
- Android: open your Profile with your picture in the top left, scroll to the very bottom and tap Delete account. Type DELETE, choose whether the backups on this phone go too, and tap Delete my account forever.
- Web, at app.yourkata.com: open your Profile with your picture in the top left, or with Profile in the side menu on a wide screen, scroll to the very bottom and choose Delete account. Type DELETE and choose Delete my account forever.
The deletion runs at once, and Kata signs you out on that device when it is done.
Bought a plan in the App Store or Google Play? Deleting the account does not end a store subscription: cancel it in your Apple Account subscriptions or in Google Play, under Payments and subscriptions. If one is still running, the app tells you. A plan bought on the web ends with the account.
Without the app
No phone at hand, or the app does not open? Write to contact@yourkata.com from the email address of your Kata account, with the subject Delete my account. Writing from that address is how we know the request is yours. We confirm by reply, then delete the account and what Kata's servers hold for it, as set out below, within 30 days, usually much sooner.
Signed in with Apple and chose Hide My Email? Your account then uses Apple's relay address. You can find it in your Apple Account settings, under Sign in with Apple: put it in your message, and we write to it to confirm.
What is deleted, and when
When you confirm in the app, at once; when you write to us, within the 30 days above:
- On Kata's servers: your account and sign-in, your plan, invites and earned months, usage counts, the daily heartbeat and the persona summary, your push tokens and notification settings, your Duos and Groups with their daily values, your secure shares, and the encrypted copy of your data if you had one.
- Billing: a plan bought on the web is closed with the account, so nothing renews.
- WHOOP: deleting in the app revokes Kata's access to your WHOOP account.
- On the device you delete from: everything Kata keeps there is wiped: logs, chats, memory, photos, settings, reminders and your encryption key.
Kata never kept a copy of your messages. Our AI provider deletes the requests it processed for your replies within 30 days, as it does for every request.
What stays, and for how long
- Backups on your phone, if you keep them. The app asks, and deleting them is the default. Kept backups stay as files in Kata's folder on that phone, and in the phone's own iCloud or Google device backup if you have it on, so you can restore one if you sign up again there. Deleting the Kata app removes the files from the phone; a copy inside a device backup goes when that backup is replaced or deleted.
- Kata data on your other devices. Your data lives on each device. Deleting the account wipes the one you delete from; on another phone or browser it stays until you delete the Kata app there or clear the site data of app.yourkata.com.
- Files you exported yourself, wherever you saved them.
- The record of what you agreed to, for ten years. Which versions of the Terms and Privacy Policy you accepted, when, on which surface and in which language. After the deletion it is kept apart from everything else, linked only to a keyed fingerprint of your email address and your former account ID, for ten years, the general limitation period under Swiss law, and then deleted, as section 10 of the privacy policy says.
- Fingerprints that keep free offers to one per person, for 24 months. Keyed fingerprints of your email address and of the Apple or Google sign-in linked to the account: one-way values that cannot be turned back into the address. They are used only to check whether a new account belongs to someone who already had the free 30 days of Kata Plus or an invite reward, which such an account then does not get again, and they are deleted after 24 months, as section 6 of the privacy policy says.
- Billing records the law makes us keep. Billing and payment records stay for the statutory tax and accounting periods (section 18 of the privacy policy). The payment providers, Stripe on the web and Apple or Google in their stores, keep their own records under their own terms.
