Most health apps are a database with a friendly face. You do the work of translating your life into their forms, and in return they store it. Kata inverts that. You talk about your day like a person, and the system does the translating. Here is what that actually means, and how it works underneath.

The chat is the app

The central idea is simple: one conversation runs everything. There is no maze of screens to learn. You tell Kata what happened, by chat, by voice, or with a photo of your plate, and it takes care of the rest.

A single center switch flips between two modes. In Coach mode you are talking, asking, planning. In Data mode you see and edit everything directly: the numbers, the charts, the log. Same information, two ways in. People who love a clean conversation stay in Coach mode. People who want to enter a weigh-in by hand switch to Data mode and do exactly that. Neither is hidden behind the other.

Behind the chat sits a full personal health OS, organized into the areas of a real day: Today, Train, Fuel, Sleep, Supplements, Trends, Physique. Each has its own considered design and its own Japanese gradient, so the app feels like one calm system rather than a bundle of separate tools.

Nothing happens silently

This is the part we are most careful about. When you talk, Kata proposes lock-in cards: a weigh-in, a meal, a glass of water, a workout, a supplement taken. You decide how those get saved.

  • Manual mode: Kata proposes, and you confirm every card before it is written. Nothing enters your log without a tap.
  • Auto mode: Kata saves as you talk, and every save still lands in the log, clearly, and every one is undoable.

Manual or auto, you choose. The rule underneath both is the same: the coach never writes to your data without you knowing. That is what makes it safe to talk freely.

Memory that compounds

A coach that forgets you is just a search box. Kata's real value is that it remembers, and gets more useful the longer you use it. It holds your history, your patterns, your preferences, the context that turns generic advice into advice for you.

This is also, honestly, the switching cost. The longer you and Kata practice together, the more it knows, and the less any blank-slate alternative can match. We think that is the right kind of moat: one you build by being genuinely useful over time, not one you lock people into.

Local-first privacy

Here is the line that shapes every other decision: what you tell Kata stays with you. Your chats, your photos and your health story live on your device, not on our servers. We keep only the little it takes to run your account, and nothing in detail.

This is architecture, not a promise. A coach only works if you can tell it everything, and you only tell it everything when it stays between the two of you. There are no ads and no reselling, ever. The one thing Kata never sells is the user.

Connected, not collected

Kata connects to WHOOP for recovery, HRV, sleep stages and strain, and to Apple Health on iPhone and Health Connect on Android. The principle is in the phrase: connected, not collected. The tokens stay on your device, and an import never overwrites what you logged yourself. Your own words always win over an automated reading.

Kata AI, and where it stops

The coach runs on what we call Kata AI. We do not market the underlying model, because the point is not which engine sits inside; the point is what it is allowed to do. Kata AI is scope-locked. It is an AI companion for everyday health, not a doctor. It coaches, it does not diagnose or prescribe, it points you to a professional when that is the right call, and it can be wrong. Wellness, not diagnosis. Keeping that boundary explicit is part of building something trustworthy.

The design, and the platform

Visually, Kata is deliberately quiet: a single warm grey ground, soft ink rather than hard black, generous whitespace, and the nine Japanese gradients that give each area its own colour. A whisper of paper-like grain, never loud. The typography is clean and editorial. The aim is a health tool that feels calm to open, because a calm tool is one you actually keep using.

Kata runs as a web app today, with native iPhone and Android shells, and it works offline. You can back up and restore to iCloud, to Google-backed storage, or as a download you keep yourself.

Put together, it is one sentence: a coach that knows your numbers, inside a system that remembers you, private by design. That is the whole product, and every technical choice serves it.
